First Impressions of Guatemala

Image
Flores, Guatemala For those who don’t yet know, I will be spending the summer in Central America, drifting through El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama before heading to South America for the rest of the year. For now, however, my roots lie in Guatemala, a country I will call home for the next two months. But what of Guatemala? What do I know, what have I seen, what are my first impressions of this place? I admittedly did not know much before I got here, and I still don’t. I arrived first in Flores, in the north, a small city that is usually for those who plan on visiting majestic Tikal. Even in unassuming Flores, however, the streets shone as if adorned with jewels, shades of blue and pink and green bouncing off each other with the setting of the sun. The meals were hearty, the smiles genuine. Moving on to Antigua, my new home, I am greeted by everyone with ...

15 Interesting Facts about Oaxaca

Image
Oaxaca, Oaxaca.  It was so delightful to visit this place and then write all about what I experienced.  Sometimes, I ran out of words to describe the emotions, flavors, and textures I encountered during my short trip. Because of that, I have decided to share some of the things I learned while visiting this awesome Mexican state. Facts about Oaxaca, Mexico Here are 15 interesting facts in order to wrap up my coverage of this city and state: 1. Most of the municipalities in the state are governed by a customs and traditions system with recognized forms of self-governance.  This is a place where “modern” laws seem to have no place. 2. The name of the state comes from the name of its capital.  The name comes from the Nahuatl, “Huaxyacac”, which refers to a tree. 4. ...

A Morning at N/a’an ku sê Wildlife Sanctuary

I was there. I was in Namibia. After a very taxing day of travel, I unfortunately had a fitful night's sleep. I'm not sure how many hours I slept that night but I know I was up for around 2 or 3 in the middle of the night. I woke up to the sun scorching us within our car. Sadly, I'd slept through my 9am alarm which was meant to wake us in time for an activity I had planned at N/a'an ku sê wildlife sanctuary at 10am. It was 9.30am and I felt a sinking feeling within my stomach. We were going to miss the activity - something I'd looked forward to for so long. In 2013 I'd spent 2 weeks of my summer volunteering at N/a'an ku sê. You can read all about what I got up to here. It was an incredible experience where I got to meet so many rescued animals. I will never forget coming face to face with Samira the cheetah who lay down purring at my feet, so similar to my kitties back home! Nor will I forget the time I got to look after a baby baboon for the n...
